Mid purple in colour. A touch of oak on the nose, with some fruit concentration beneath but it is discreet. Darker berries show through. On the palate the fruit starts fresh and strict, then blossoms. Darker notes to the strawberry, a mineral undertow, refined tannins, less wild than Bonnes Mares can be, yet reading just as it should. White soil to the fore perhaps but both vying for attention. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted Nov 2025.

Manager Jean Lupatelli explains that Bonne-Mares was less affected by the weather in 2024 than Musigny; his results attest to the potential of the wines produced here. The fruit aromas are rich and spicy, with a mulberry scent and a hint of earth and iron. The texture is powerful and structured, but the wine remains approachable. This will open in three to five years and should drink well for decades.

Summer flowers, cassis and smoked cherries fill the glass. Sophisticated, curvaceous tannins blend with racy acidity to give this sturdy scaffolding for long aging. Dense, focused and tightly wound, the wine’s character clearly shows its origins in Bonnes-Mares red soils. Yet even when tasted from a new barrel, everything is already in place. Still, this easily deserves eight to ten years in the cellar and preferably more.

The 2024 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has an almost "mellow" nose, as if it were observing Musigny being picked apart by the growing season, relieved not to be taking the brunt. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a fine bead of acidity, bright and tensile with an edgy red peppercorn-tinged finish. I admire the nascent energy in this cuvée and though it misses a bit of Grand Cru grandeur on the finish it should give a lot of pleasure.(NM)
