Valderba is a second label at Pago Aylés, which is the only Vino de Pago in Aragón. A special category of Spanish wine that represents the highest classification in the Spanish wine quality system (higher even than DOCa), the Vino de Pago designation is meant to distinguish and differentiate an estate from surrounding sites. Generally, they are rural areas with unique characteristics in both soil and microclimate that produce outstanding, unique wines emblematic of that specific site. These estates must grow their own grapes, produce and bottle the wine on site, and show consistently high quality over time. The resulting wines have distinctive and singular qualities that set them apart. Pago Ayles is a large estate with roots that can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The climate here is considered to be extreme continental, meaning hot and dry summers, followed by very cold winters, producing wines of great intensity. The Valderba Tempranillo is made from fruit sourced from the younger vines (less than 25 years old) on the property. Made in an unoaked style, with the emphasis on vibrant, primary red fruit notes, this is an easy drinking style of wine that really overdelivers for the modest price, especially considering the provenance!
