Whitcraft Winery’s story starts in 1985, when Chris and Kathleen Whitcraft founded the small, hands-on operation in Santa Barbara after Chris spent years learning from iconic California winemakers such as Joe Heitz, Dick Graff, and Burt Williams. Chris became known for early block-designated Pinot Noirs—most notably the 1991 Bien Nacido Q-Block—and for a strict minimal-intervention ethos: foot-treading, gravity bottling, no fining or filtration, and minimal sulfur, all in service of letting vineyard character speak clearly. After Chris’s passing in 2014, his son Drake took over, rebuilding the winery from financial distress and gradually restoring production to roughly 2,000–3,000 cases annually while maintaining the family’s uncompromising style. Today Drake works with more than 15 sustainably farmed—often certified organic—vineyards across Santa Barbara County, crafting Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah with the same commitment to purity and site transparency that defined his father’s early work.
