As it always is, this is the bad boy of the range with somewhat riper and certainly more expressive aromas of red pinot liqueur aromas and rich, full, muscled and powerful flavors that are robust yet supple and completely drench the palate in sap and while this is quite firmly structured, the tannins are completely integrated.

The 2004 Guyon Clos du Roy is every bit as impressive as their fine Bressandes, and like that wine, is really quite moderately marked by the style of the vintage. The bouquet jumps from the glass in a complex mélange of cherries, plums, woodsmoke, a bit of venison, coffee, coriander seed and stony soil tones. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and well-balanced, with a fine core, moderate tannins and fine length and grip on the very gently peppery finish. Fine juice with another few years of cellaring.

Notes

Antonin Guyon works with fruit from Corton-Clos du Roy on the hill of Corton. This site’s limestone and marl soils, combined with favorable exposure, yield wines of structure and depth. The result is a Corton that reflects its terroir with power, balance, and a clear sense of place.
