The 2023 Rosso di Montalcino is a model of purity, with sour cherries, cedary spice, spiced orange and crushed autumn leaves on the nose. Smooth but lifted and fresh, the palate offers a balance between vivid, ripe red and blue fruits, crunchy minerals and brisk acidity. Harmonious and classic in style, the 2023 leaves a youthful tension and a twang of citrus to fade slowly. (EG)

Expressive and smoky, the 2023 Rosso Di Montalcino pours a medium red/garnet hue and opens with tar, ripe cherries, dried orange, and baked earth. The palate is medium-bodied and mouthwatering, with bright salinity, refined tannins, and a lifted line of acidity that keeps it refreshing through the finish. It’s a lovely Rosso with a lot to offer. (AF)

Notes

Perched at high elevation on the southeastern slopes of Montalcino, San Carlo is a small organic estate whose vineyards are surrounded by forest and shaped by the cooler, wind-exposed conditions of this more rugged part of the appellation. The estate farms old-clone Sangiovese in galestro and clay-rich soils, producing wines that emphasize freshness, savory complexity, and transparency to site rather than weight or extraction. Their Rosso di Montalcino reflects this restrained philosophy, offering a more immediate and vibrant expression of the estate’s mountain-influenced terroir while retaining the structure and aromatic detail that define traditional Montalcino wines.
