2012 Domaine Philippe Gavignet Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Les Chaboeufs"

John Gilman
Review Date: 03/2014The 2012 Chaboeufs from Philippe Gavignet is also outstanding, offering up a deep and classic nose of black cherries, dark berries, raw cocoa, gamebirds, woodsmoke, dark soil tones that are already hinting at the sous bois to come and a nice base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bdoied, pure and complex, with a sappy core of fruit, excellent soil signature, suave tannins and excellent length and grip on the well-balanced and classy finish. This seems likely to drink a bit earlier than the Bousselots, but perhaps it was just bottled a tad later and is showing a bit less structure than it will ultimately display when it has fully recovered from the mise. This will be excellent.

Notes
Domaine Philippe Gavignet is a traditional family estate based in Nuits-St-Georges, known for producing structured, age-worthy Pinot Noir from old-vine parcels across the Côte de Nuits. The premier cru vineyard “Les Chaboeufs,” situated on the northern side of the appellation near Vosne-Romanée, is prized for its limestone-rich soils and slightly higher elevation, conditions that tend to produce a more perfumed and finely detailed style of Nuits-St-Georges. Gavignet’s restrained winemaking approach allows the vineyard’s combination of dark fruit, earthy minerality, and firm underlying structure to emerge clearly, reflecting the classic character of this historic Burgundy terroir.
