2016 Diego Conterno Comune di Monforte d’Alba Barolo

James Suckling
Review Date: 08/2020Very attractive aromas of dried strawberries with dried spices, such as cloves, as well as hints of hazelnuts. It’s full-bodied, layered and beautiful with a long, savory finish. Very well crafted with plenty of serious character.

The 2016 Barolo del Commune di Monforte d’Alba is a sinewy, nervous wine that needs at least a few years in bottle to be at its best. Firm Monforte tannins envelop a core of dark fruit. Crushed rocks, minerals, black cherry, mint, sage and licorice open in the glass, but only with great reluctance. A bit of patience will be rewarded. This is such a pretty and expressive Barolo. (AG)

Aromas of rose petal, underbrush and leather lead the nose. The solid, savory palate offers raspberry jam, clove and tobacco alongside taut youthful tannins. (KO)
