2022 Domaine de la Butte "Perrières" Bourgueil

Review Date: 01/2025This young vintage of Perrières stats off with a slightly reduced character on the nose, but beneath this there lies layers of blackcurrant, toast, violets and black olive which serve to enchant. There follows a charming style on the palate, textural and complete, with seams of powdery limestone grip, peppery fruit, currants and olives, a seamless texture and a fine sense of freshness and grip. It finishes strong too, with a flourish of structure and phenolic energy. This is a top Bourgueil for the cellar.

Notes
Jacky Blot discovered wine as a junior pâtissier while working at a restaurant in Paris in his younger days. Eventually deciding to follow the winemaking track in life, he ultimately came to acquire the Domaine la Taille aux Loups in Montlouis-sur-Loire, some twenty years ago, and eventually added the Domaine de la Butte in Bourgueil to his portfolio. The two appellations both reside along the Loire and perhaps do not have the same notoriety as their kissing cousins, Vouvray and Chinon. But what Jacky does is extremely special and his wines rival the quality levels of many of those more famous regions' top producers. Domaine de la Butte's Perrières vineyard sits on clay over pure limestone, one of the best expositions you could hope for in this region. Made from 100% Cabernet Franc from 30+ year old vines, the grapes are destemmed and the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine sees some barrel aging (about 20% new) and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. This is a classic and cellar-worthy rendition from one of the Loire's top winemakers.
