Winemaker Francisco Baettig first tasted this wine in 2004, but it wasn't until 2015 that a new style (consistent with Baettig's evolving approach to winemaking) began to emerge. It was a slow process to recover the original style of this wine (a brand dating back to 1930), a style much more focused on fruit and freshness, achieved by reducing the use of new barrels and bringing forward the harvest. And in a perfect year like 2018, that work crystallized in this new Don Max, made with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon from Errázuriz's estate in Aconcagua, planted in 1978. This Cabernet, rich in balsamic notes, is transformed here into aromas of mint and herbs, as well as juicy and refreshing red fruits. A very low alcohol content (13.5%) lends it a certain lightness and a medium body. But make no mistake, this is a wine for aging, with enough acidity and tannins to evolve elegantly over the next decade.

The violets, roses, blueberries and blackcurrants flow from the glass. Full-bodied, tight and very focused with ultra-fine tannins that flow over the edges of the wine. Extremely long and polished.

The 2018 Don Maximiano is 70% Cabernet, 15% Malbec, 7% Carménère, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc from Panquehue, Aconcagua. Intense purple in the glass, it delivers a nose of red fruit with plum, a little jam, black currant, mint, balsamic notes and rose over secondary woody aromas. Ample and juicy on the palate with good energy; the tannins are fine and the flavors intense. A wine that might be described as the missing link between the past and the present. (JH)

Deepest crimson. Deep, inviting and lavish in its dark cassis fruit. Firm, thick, dense tannins but velvet in texture. A big, powerful wine that needs much more time but already shows the sheer class of the fruit. (JH)
