2018 L'Ecole No. 41 "Stillwater Creek Vineyard" Columbia Valley Sémillon
91
Vinous
Review Date: 06/2018Bright light yellow. More pristine and pungent on the nose than the Columbia Valley Semillon, with lemon curd, orange blossom and lanolin aromas lifted by the wine's firm acidity. At once dense and lively on the palate, conveying a captivating touch of honeyed sweetness to its juicy flavors of citrus peel, white stone fruits, flowers and minerals. Like the Columbia Valley Semillon, this wine was fermented in neutral barrels but here there's less wood influence and more precision and inner-mouth lift. In fact, this very stylish Semillon is very different in character, due in large part to its meaningfully higher acidity (6.5 g/l vs. 5.6) and lower pH (3.01 vs. 3.23) than the Columbia Valley example. Perhaps a bit more refined and less chewy than the 2017 version and subtly long and alive on the palate-dusting aftertaste. (ST)
