New oak dominates this wine, with a rich eruption of toasted meringue, vanilla, burnt butter sauce and woodspice aromas and flavors, yet beneath that elaborate veneer is a wine that easily supports it. The fruit is fantastically concentrated, suggesting cherries and black raspberries baked into a pie—pie crust, and dusting of cinnamon sugar and cocoa included. For all that, the wine is thoroughly dry. Whoever says Merlot is dead should taste this beauty.

The 2007 Merlot Truchard Vineyard is richer and fuller than the ‘08 version. The ‘07 possesses abundant notes of chocolate, plum, cherry, coffee and blacker fruits. Deep ruby/purple-tinged with an enticing texture and a rich, luscious mouthfeel...These are impressive efforts from proprietor Mark Carter.

Bright ruby-red. High-toned aromas of blueberry, blackberry and mint. Tightly wound and firm, conveying a rather cool--or at least early-picked--personality for this warm year. Black fruit, violet and mint flavors are a bit tart and lacking in pliancy. This rather brooding, savory Merlot shows very good intensity but finishes with a firm spine of drying tannins. (ST)

A Merlot for Syrah lovers, this is big and beefy at first, then mellows on the finish, with aromas of smoky black currant, tobacco leaf and spice. Tannins suggest patience. (TF)
