A drop-dead gorgeous wine teeming with brambly red fruit, earth, bay leaf, dried sage, and crushed graphite notes. Medium to full-bodied with an impressively dense mid-palate, ultimately serving as a prime example of how Napa’s abundant fruit in youth begins to mellow and find impressive integration as those ripe fruit flavours begin to permeate every inch of the wine, infusing it with warm, dark berry tones or calling to mind a drizzle of raspberry coulis, layered into rich earth and mineral notes all wrapped in a package of dried cigar leaves and housed in rich cedar. So expressive! Red Rock Terrace is an iron-rich, rocky 2.8-ha north-facing site on the Diamond Creek Estate. Today, the Diamond Creek estate is owned by the Rouzaud family, owners of second-growth Château Pichon Lalande in Pauillac and Château de Pez in St.-Estèphe and Champagne house Maison Louis Roederer. Frédéric Rouzaud, President of Maison Louis Roederer, leads all the icon companies of the Roederer Collection, which includes Roederer Estate, Domaine Anderson, Scharffenberger Cellars, and Merry Edwards in California’s Russian River Valley, to name a few. The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rock Terrace boasts serious depth and power, but it appears to be holding all of the elements very much in reserve. Hints of camphor, tar, menthol, wild flowers and dark fruit open up gradually over time. Constantly changing in the glass, the 2009 is endowed with superb energy and tension. It is also incredibly inward and in need of considerable cellaring. (AG) 95+

The iron-rich red soils of this seven-acre, north-facing hillside produced a classic 2009. It starts off luscious and develops detail as it takes on air, building on the fresh red berry scents with notes of flowers and brisk edges of tannins. Streamlined and tightly focused in its structure, this is glorious cabernet.

The ripest of Diamond Creek’s new ’09 Cabernets, Red Rock shows a sun-blasted quality of red currants, blueberry and cassis. Heady and exotic, this is rich in tannins and noble in acidity. While it’s a joy to drink now and over the next eight years, its extreme ripeness may limit its longterm ageability.
