2012 Kukkula "Sisu" Paso Robles Rhone Blend

Review Date: 06/2016Look at this wine’s labeled alcohol level (15.5 percent) and you might be suspicious, but taste the wine before you pass judgment. Grown organically without irrigation at Kukkula’s hillside estate a mile north of Tablas Creek, this is a vivid and complex GSM blend. The woodsy, soy-edged black plum flavor is reminiscent of some Barossa reds, yet the tension between its succulent texture and bright, limestone-grown acidity is unique to western Paso Robles. Decant it for a lamb stew.

This blend of 52% Syrah, 25% Grenache and 23% Mourvèdre is quite sultry on the nose, with crushed boysenberry, dried violets, wet clay and the slightest touch of soy. Pepper and moist earth arise on the palate, alongside blackberry and blueberry fruit, a touch of cocoa and concentrated lavender and other purple-flower flavors. (MK)

Made from 52% Syrah, 25% Grenache and 23% Mourvedre, the 2012 Sisu is a classic Paso GSM blend that has a ripe, layered and delicious style. Black cherries, raspberry, licorice, toasted spice and hints of meatiness all show here, and it flows onto the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a core of sweet fruit and terrific finish. It's another winner... (JD)

Dark ruby. Sexy, smoke-tinged dark berry and cherry-cola aromas are lifted by a peppery note, with a suggestion of floral pastilles emerging with air. Spicy, penetrating and gently sweet, offering vibrant black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that flesh out on the back half. This suave, seamless wine finishes with fine-grained tannins and good grip. (JR)
