Review Date: 12/2024

A super-restrained wine showing complex aromas of rhubarb, strawberries, violets, raspberries and blood oranges. The attack is quite ripe, with dense, velvety tannins soaked in fruit, a medium body and refreshing lifted acidity. The finish is long and savory. Drink or hold.

The Biondi Santi Rossos are famous for being at the level of many other estate's Brunellos and the 2022 carries on this tradition. It opens with heady scents of camphor, dog rose, wild berry and dark spice while the full-bodied, elegantly structured palate offers ripe strawberry, red cherry, star anise and blood orange set against taut, refined tannins. It boasts surprising freshness for the dry, scorching vintage that keeps it lifted and balanced. While it's already tempting, this will be even better in a few years.

The earliest harvest ever at Biondi-Santi (starting 31 August) followed a warm spring and hot summer with some rain, giving optimal growing conditions. Viticulture and winemaking director Federico Radi describes the estate's Rosso as 'our running back wine', for its big-boned yet agile structure. Approachable yet still serious, it's dominated by succulent strawberry, red cherry and blood orange, aromatic star anise and vibrant acidity. Grapes are sourced from the youngest vineyards across the property and the wine is aged for 12 months in Slavonian oak barrels. (TG)

Offers ample fruit in the form of cherry, strawberry and red currant notes accented by tar, iron and eucalyptus. Firmly structured, tense and elegant, with a solid grip on the long finish. Drink now through 2030. (BS)

Notes

From the legendary estate that invented Brunello, the 2022 Biondi Santi Rosso di Montalcino is a stunning and classically styled Sangiovese that showcases the estate’s mastery in a warm vintage. Far from a simple “Rosso,” this is a wine with serious structure and pedigree. The nose is wonderfully aromatic and pure, with notes of sour cherry, cranberry, and dried rose petal, layered with hints of savory herbs, leather, and a distinct, stony minerality. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, taut, and elegant, with a core of pristine red fruit framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. The finish is exceptionally long and resonant. A benchmark Rosso built for the cellar, this will reward years of patience.
