1972 Rausan-Ségla, Margaux
Notes
Château Rausan-Ségla entered the early 1970s still under the long tenure of Liverpool shipping magnate John Holt, who owned the estate until 1989. The period followed the devastating 1956 frost, which had forced extensive replanting and modernization of fermentation vats—work that continued to shape vineyard composition into the ’70s. By this time, the estate’s 51-hectare Margaux vineyard was planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, forming the backbone of its grand vin production. Though the 1972 vintage emerged from a challenging era for Margaux quality, Rausan-Ségla maintained its Second Growth identity, producing roughly 8,000 cases annually. These years set the stage for later improvements under consultant Émile Peynaud in the 1980s.
