2021 Vietti "Monvigliero" Barolo
98
James Suckling
Review Date: 01/2025Lots of violets, cola and blueberries on the nose, complemented by a clay pot note. Fascinating aromatics. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with polished tannins. A cohesive and complete wine that’s angular and incisive, with subtlety, precision and elegance. Lots of personality in each detail. It needs at least four years to soften. But what a wine. (JGL)

Notes
The 2021 Vietti "Monvigliero" Barolo is an ethereal, highly aristocratic expression from Verduno’s ultimate grand cru. This vintage is a stunning showcase of the commune's loose, light-colored limestone soils, combined with a sophisticated winemaking program that utilizes 60% whole-cluster fermentation to highlight the vineyard’s signature perfume and architectural tension. In the glass, it shows a pale, luminous ruby color with absolute clarity. The nose is hauntingly aromatic and lifted, exploding with high-toned red fruits, strawberry, rose hip, and pink salt, underlaid with complex Mediterranean notes of sweet hay, lemon leaf, and wild garden herbs. On the palate, the wine is all class—exceptionally linear, savory, and weightless yet firmly structured. A driving, racy acidic nerve and an intense, persistent salinity effortlessly frame the delicate fruit core, sharing a similarly taut, vertical personality with the estate's Ravera. The tannins are impeccably fine and chalky, leading into a long, focused finish laced with flinty minerality and white pepper.
