2021 Vietti "Brunate" Barolo

Wine Advocate
Review Date: 11/2025Brunate is also one of my favorite wines from Vietti (and, boy, is it hard to choose favorites) thanks to that playful hint of fresh mint that I usually find, especially in the best vintages. You certainly get it in the 2021 Barolo Brunate, and although I'm not sure how long it will last as the wine evolves, my experience suggests it only gets stronger and more beautiful in time. Indeed, this vintage (with 23 days of skin maceration) shows exceptional depth and precision with aromas that go beyond the mint, spanning instead to grilled rosemary and Darjeeling tea. The wine shows excellent textural support and broad shoulders, followed by tannins that are both sweet and chalky. It shows profound generosity and depth. Brunate always has an intense, dark soul. A total of 4,835 bottles were made. 97+ (ML)

Notes
The 2021 Vietti "Brunate" Barolo is a masterfully executed, deeply profound expression from one of the most revered crus shared between La Morra and Barolo. While neighboring crus from Castiglione Falletto or Verduno lean into pure, weightless verticality, Brunate delivers its signature intense, dark soul, boasting exceptional textural breadth and muscular density without ever sacrificing the structural precision of the classic 2021 vintage. In the glass, it shows a translucent, bright cherry-ruby color. The nose is highly complex, potent, and beautifully layered, opening with somber, dark-fleshed fruits, plums, and wild raspberries, quickly giving way to classic notes of tar, sweet baking spices, and crushed violets. Brunate’s hallmark cooling element is fully on display here, offering distinct, vibrant aromas of fresh mint, grilled rosemary, and Darjeeling tea. On the palate, the wine possesses broad shoulders and a virile personality. It is rich and deep, effortlessly matching its concentration with a driving spine of energetic acidity. The tannic structure is formidable—decidedly firm and chalky—yet carries a sweet refinement that coats the palate rather than drying it out. Complex balsamic nuances, savory earth, and dark mineral notes weave through the finish, which is incredibly persistent, leaving a lingering, echoing aftertaste of iron, menthol, and dark cocoa.
