A bottle of Romanée-St-Vivant 2009 over lunch was a superb counterpoint to our tasting of the 2020s, allowing us to see how another sunny vintage has evolved thirteen years from the harvest. The wine was voluptuous, with a lovely, ripe plummy fruit now developing savoury, earthy complexity. The texture is ripe and silky, opening now as the tannins recede, and the wine is expressive and beginning to show its potential, although it is still at the beginning of its evolution and will improve for decades to come. This wine is simply superb and just now coming into its own. 18,271 bottles produced. (CC)

The 2009 Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru is classic RSV, with beautifully perfumed aromatics to match its gracious, mid-weight personality. Even in 2009, a warm year, the RSV is a Burgundy of sublime polish and enchantment. (AG)

As it usually the case, here the nose is even more elegant and prettier with a highly perfumed, layered and relatively high-toned aromatic profile that is quite floral along with offering up notes of oriental tea and exotic spice on the mostly red and blue pinot fruit scents. The detailed and ultra-refined flavors are crystalline in their purity and while they don't have the robust power of the Grands Echézeaux, there is notably more finesse and even a bit more overall length on the mildly austere finish. It's hard to capture mouth feel in words but think of lacy and silky textured flavors that possess a truly fine grain and you'll have a good idea about the palate impression of the '09 RSV. In a word, brilliant.

Incisive and reserved on the nose, this red gives an immediate sense of its firm structure, which supports pure cherry, strawberry spice and mineral flavors. Ends with excellent length. (BS)

Notes

98 points, Jane Anson for Decanter: "Romanée-St Vivant is one of the six grand cru reds that Aubert de Villaine produces out of his legendary, co-owned Vosne-Romanée property, sharing this particular vineyard between nine other owners, although Aubert has the biggest slice of the pie at 5.28 hectares. The aromatic complexity curling out of this particular glass is just incredible – soft, dense and floral, it has seductive notes of violets, blackberries, green tea and woodsmoke. This is still a baby, deserving of at least another ten years in bottle before really starting to open up. But whenever you drink it, expect elegance over finesse, complexity over ease, and expect to be smiling for days. " (12/2017) Charming and opulent, with succulent fruit on the entry, but lots of material behind. Opens to show a lovely and succulent nose, with a palate to match. There is more structure here than first apparent, as the finish shows lots of very fine-grained tannins. This is sappy, rich and very long, with a slight green or stemmy note on the nose. Ripe and beautiful. Hard to capture at present but terrific and classic RSV. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 02/12)
