The Piero Busso 2019 Barbaresco Gallina Viti Vecchie offers a contrasting personality, with sweeter-feeling tannins and a tightly knit texture shaped by the sandier soils of Gallina. Despite extended maceration and long aging, the wine retains a more primary and youthful profile compared to Albesani, emphasizing clarity and precision. Produced from vines planted in 1953 and aged for three years in large oak followed by three years in bottle, this limited release of 958 bottles highlights Gallina’s refined and textural elegance. Notes of ripe berries and plum skins with hints of cloves, cocoa and hot asphalt. Medium- to full-bodied with a compact tannin structure. Firm and lengthy with red and dark berries on offer. Lightly chewy and viscous at the end. Drink after 2025.

Vinous

Review Date: 09/2023
The 2019 Barbaresco Gallina is the most easygoing of the three 2019s I tasted for this report, and also the most forward. Worn-in leather, tobacco, spice, menthol, dried herbs and dried cherry fruit are all suggestive of a wine with early tertiary characteristics. Even so, the 2019 has enough depth to drink well for at least a handful of years. (AG)

Notes

The Piero Busso "Gallina - Viti Vecchie" Barbaresco Riserva is the crown jewel of the estate, produced only in exceptional years from a tiny 1.3-hectare plot of ancient vines planted in 1953. Located in the heart of the Gallina cru in Neive, these vines sit on calcareous-clay soils that produce a wine of immense depth and structural integrity. On the nose, it is dark and brooding, unfolding with layers of black cherry, spiced plum, and anise, which evolve into delicate floral notes of dried rose and violet with air. The palate is warm and enveloping, defined by extraordinarily silky yet intense tannins and a savory persistence. True to its "old-school" pedigree, the winemaking involves a long submerged-cap maceration (up to 60 days) followed by three years of aging in large oak casks and another three years in the bottle before release. This extended patience results in a Barbaresco that is powerful, elegant, and built for decades of cellaring.
