This is scintillatingly fresh. Citrus zest, anise, hay and almonds fill the prim palate that quivers with taut acidity. These 50+ year-old vines deliver a gentle fruit suppleness, too. A fine thread of minerality runs through the wine and into the lingering finish. Give this a few years for the crunchier side of the wine to subside.

With its particular northerly exposition within Vaillons, you would expect Les Lys to be very successful in 2022. And it is. A fine blend of freshness allied to sun-drenched ripeness, with a pronounced mineral finish. A great example of the distinctive terroir of Les Lys. Long, mineral, salty tail.(AH)

Always one of the more quintessentially Chablisien wines in the range, the 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Les Lys offers up notes of citrus oil, white flowers, wet stones and oyster shell, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and pure palate that's suave but incisive, concluding with a saline finish. The 2022 crop is the penultimate vintage of organic conversion for the 78-hectare Domaine William Fèvre, though it's actually the 16th year the estate has been practicing organic. It's a terrific success, exhibiting tension and precision that isn't universally to be taken for granted in this Chablis vintage. Beyond the quality of the wines themselves, the big news at this address, which has been managed with sagacity and competence by Didier Séguier since 1999, is its acquisition by Domaines des Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). I'm sure Fèvre couldn't have found a better steward for the future.(KK)

Just assembled so cloudy, as all the lees remain in suspension. The bouquet is less fine but shows nonetheless a wealth of pure white fruit which is attractive. Lots of marl with a mix of portlandian and kimmeridgian soils, the former adding the body, the latter leaving the lick of salinity. Good length. Tasted Jun 2023.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Not many producers; 17 ha in total, here are 1 ha from 2 parcels from the top of appellation, N-NE facing so with freshness and acidity. It’s part of Vaillons but these vines are over the top of the hill so not the same exposure. Old vines with a small yield. Decided to separate since 1998, before was in the Vaillons. ‘Naturally these vines don’t produce much, only 40 hl/ha in 2018 – there’s a lot of court noué here, hence the low yields of small grapes.A similar style to the Vaillons but with extra impact. Ooh – extra volume balanced with some fluidity. Then there’s a twist of finishing intensity – you can sense a little oak today – average 5-year-old barrels – a mix of 228s and 350s. Wait 2 years and the oak will be gone – that’s a great wine."(10/2024).
