Mumm Napa began in the late 1970s as the California project of Champagne G.H. Mumm, with its first wine released in 1983 under the Domaine Mumm label. The winery was formally established in Rutherford in 1986–87 under founding winemaker Guy Devaux, who selected cooler Carneros and Oak Knoll vineyards for traditional-method sparkling production. Though best known for méthode traditionnelle bottlings, Mumm Napa also produces still wines.
