2023 Chateau du Clos Pouilly-Fuisse 1er Cru "Pouilly"

Review Date: 01/2026The soil is a downwash of clay on marl, very similar to Les Reisses (see Château de Beauregard). A glowing lively yellow colour. No feeling of the south here, yet increased density on the nose. The balance of everything, power, class, restraint. White fruit with a little inflection of yellow. Strongly marl influenced. The natural acidity is more of minerality here without taking on iodine character. Brilliantly persistent. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted May 2025.

Beautifully open on the nose, this exudes tree blooms, rich citrus, vanilla bean and donut peaches. Just as dense on the palate, this is brightened by a live wire of chalky tension.

Both discreet dollops of wood toast and spice are present on the aromas of mineral reduction, white orchard fruit and a hint of zest. The intense medium weight flavors possess fine richness and volume that contributes to a beguiling texture that carries over to the youthfully austere bitter lemon-inflected finish that is well-balanced and attractively detailed. This too could use better depth but that should just be a matter of moderate patience.*Burghound Outstanding!*

The 2023 Pouilly-Fuissé Pouilly 1er Cru has quite an understated bouquet that demands coaxing, but almost reluctantly reveals crushed stone and loamy scents intertwined with yellow fruit. The palate is well balanced with a very subtle reduction on the entry. There is a keen line of acidity with a saline (verging on peppery) finish. Distant in a way, but I would happily stick some of these in my cellar.(NM)
