A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Ciel du Cheval Vineyard begins with power and precision on the nose with chocolate-covered blueberries, dusty red plum skin and an iron-rich core that delivers seductive aromas with elegant oak spices. Full-bodied, the wine is generous with red pepper tones that give way to subtle herbal essence, followed by blackberry, cassis and dark cherry skin. The wine ends with pleasure and complexity on the long, elaborate finish that continues to evolve with notions of plum, vanilla, bitter dark chocolate and dried pepper flakes. The wine spent 20 months in 100% French oak, 75% first use. This stunning success is well-worth seeking out and putting into your cellar. (AM)

Bright red-ruby. Pungent aromas of red- and blackcurrant, menthol, spices and cocoa powder. A bit tighter and darker on entry than the Red Mountain Cabernet, then less sweet but more intense in the middle palate, hinting at blue and black fruits, five-spice powder and tobacco leaf. Delivers very good depth of flavor and vinosity but needs patience. Finishes with serious firm-edged but nicely buffered tannins and very good rising length. A touch of Cabernet Franc leafiness gives added complexity and lift to this savory, youthful, ageworthy wine. Broader on the palate than the Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon and longer on the aftertaste. 91+ (ST)

The aromas intrigue, with notes of cocoa, orange rind, cherry, vanilla, tar and licorice. Ripe fruit flavors follow, bringing sophistication. There's plenty of acidity and tannin structure behind it all. Give it time in the cellar to see it at its best. Drink after 2026. (SS)
