The 2023 Saumur-Champigny "les Lizières" from Clotilde Legrand is a superb young wine. The bouquet is deep, pure and nascently complex, wafting from the glass in a mix of cassis, dark berries, French Roast, chalky soil tones, tree bark, a hint of menthol and a topnote of cigar smoke. On the palate the wine is deep, young, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with a fine chassis of buried tannin, excellent focus and grip and a long, beautifully balanced and very promising finish. This is an excellent wine in the making, but it will want a few years in the cellar to soften up its tannins before it starts to drink with proper generosity.

This is an accessible and delightful young-drinking Cabernet Franc. It's everything I want in a youthful Saumur-Champigny. Generous red cherry fruit is complemented by notes of crushed rosemary and thyme. Aging entirely in stainless steel preserves the wine's freshness and juicy character. It's perfect with one of my favorite pairings: a market rotisserie chicken. Add some herb-roasted potatoes and a glass of this Cabernet Franc, and your weeknight dinner just leveled up!

The Legrand family has been crafting wine in Saumur since the 17th century and was among the pioneering producers of Saumur-Champigny. Today, Clotilde Legrand carries on the family's legacy, combining traditional winemaking with a deep respect for terroir and vintage expression. The estate's Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc vineyards, many planted on prized limestone and chalk soils and averaging 45 years of age, produce wines of remarkable freshness, structure, and longevity. Long aging in the family's historic tuffeau limestone cellars—where cool, constant temperatures provide ideal maturation conditions—helps shape wines that are equally enjoyable in their youth and capable of graceful development in the cellar. This 100% Cabernet Franc is fermented in stainless steel without added sulfur and bottled unfiltered, preserving the purity and vibrancy of the fruit. Medium-bodied and intensely aromatic, it offers generous notes of fresh cherry and raspberry framed by soft, supple tannins. Approachable and expressive, this is a deliciously drinkable Saumur-Champigny that showcases the bright, energetic side of Loire Valley Cabernet Franc.
