As I have mentioned in the past the Péninsula "Vieilles Vignes" bottling from the Gadais family is made from vines that were planted in 1929, so these ancient vines are now closing in on their one hundredth birthday. The 2023 Péninsula is a stunning young Muscadet, revealing a complex aromatic constellation of tart pear, breadfruit, citrus peel, a beautiful base of minerality, sea salts, lemon blossoms, a touch of iodine and a topnote of ocean breeze. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused, zesty and bottomless at the core with old vine fruit, with great mineral undertow and grip, impeccable balance and a long, precise and vibrant finish. This is, of course, delicious to drink today, but it is really built to be cellared for a while and to allow all of the magical complexity of ancient vines to shine front and center!

Notes

In 1952, Louis Gadais was one of the first independant bottlers of his own wines. That is quite something in a region that has long been known for producing loads of simple white wines. That early philosophy has served the estate well where their dedication to the grape Melon de Bourgogne has led to different bottlings based on soils types and extended sur lie aging. The "Peninsula" is all from vines planted on the Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine plateau over mica-gneiss soils. The average age of the vines is over 50 years of age with one plot planted in 1929. The wine is fermented with native yeasts and rests on the lees for 17 months in stainless steel vat. Also bottles without fining and filtration. The nose has notes of peach, pear and wet stones and is an idela pairing with white fish dishes like turbot and halibut.
