Notes
Founded in 1989 by the late Álvaro Castro, Quinta de Saes has become one of the benchmark estates of Portugal’s Dão region and a leading voice in the movement to revive the area. Located near the town of Viseu, the estate is surrounded by forests of pine and eucalyptus and planted with indigenous grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Jaen, Alfrocheiro, and Encruzado. Today, Álvaro’s daughter Maria Castro continues the family legacy, crafting wines that emphasize elegance, freshness, and a strong sense of place. More broadly, the Dão is one of Portugal’s oldest and most distinctive wine regions, often referred to as the country’s answer to Burgundy because of its ability to produce nuanced, age-worthy wines rather than simply powerful ones. Protected by mountain ranges on all sides, the region enjoys a temperate climate that preserves acidity and allows grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. Granite soils and high elevations contribute to wines marked by floral aromatics, fine tannins, and remarkable balance. While the Dão was once known primarily for rustic reds, a new generation of producers has transformed its reputation, focusing on old vineyards and native varieties. The resulting wines combine depth and complexity with a graceful, almost understated personality that rewards patience. Quinta de Saes stands at the forefront of this renaissance, producing wines that capture the purity and refinement that have made the Dão one of Portugal’s most exciting regions today.
