2017 Paolo Bea "Pagliaro" Sagrantino di Montefalco

Wine Advocate
This is one of two single-vineyard expressions at the top of the Paolo Bea portfolio. The 2017 Montefalco Sagrantino Pagliaro opens to brooding dark fruit and depth. The wine's complexity comes forth with blackcurrant, spice, earth, cola and medicinal herb. There is a lot to admire in the bouquet that shifts fluidly with each swirl of the glass. Despite a hefty 15% alcohol content, the wine is surprising supple and smooth. Exactly 14,709 bottles were released. (ML)

Notes
The 2017 Paolo Bea "Pagliaro" Sagrantino di Montefalco is a surprisingly "pretty" and finessed expression of a vintage known for its intense heat. While Sagrantino is famous for being one of the most tannic wines in the world, the 2017 Pagliaro displays a silkier texture and more exotic spice profile than is typical for this cuvée at this stage. It offers a "veritable spice box" on the nose, with layers of dried flowers, blackcurrant, medicinal herbs, and earthy minerals. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful (15% ABV), yet critics have noted a surprising suppleness. The dark fruit—think prunes, figs, and blackberries—is balanced by a bristling, stony acidity and fine-grained tannins that are well-integrated for such a young Sagrantino.
