Int'l Wine Review

The 2022 Temperance Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir from Lavinea pours a brilliant garnet with shimmering ruby highlights. Aromatically, it’s complex and captivating, offering layers of wild sage, freshly crushed red currants, sun-drenched strawberries, and a hint of lavender. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine delivers remarkable precision and elegance, with flavors of ripe cherry, pomegranate, and a subtle touch of thyme. The texture is silky, buoyed by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh and energetic, while delicate tannins provide structure without overpowering. The finish is long and graceful, leaving behind whispers of cranberry and savory herbs. Already stunning in its youth, this Pinot Noir promises even greater depth with time in the bottle. 341 cases produced. Highly recommended.

Jeb Dunnuck

Displaying a jeweled red hue, the 2022 Pinot Noir Temperance Hill Vineyard is very layered and beautiful, offering striking clarity in its notes of wild herbs, ripe raspberries, sunny but bright fruit, and fresh rosemary. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and has wonderful balance and a harmonious feel. Highly appealing now, with a light, juicy feel throughout the palate, it’s long and elegant and is only going to improve in another few years.

The sensational 2022 Lavinea ‘Temperance Hill Vineyard’ Pinot Noir was stored in nearly all neutral French oak before bottling. Soft and supple upon entry, this shows boysenberry compote and black truffle shavings on the palate, alongside toasty oak, and bergamot tones, with forest floor accents. This is highly-complex and delicious stuff that is already nicely evolved. Drink 2025-2040.

A Pinot with style and intensity, with a keen structure framed by detailed flavors of blueberry and raspberry that take on clove, forest floor and savory spice accents. Finishes with broad-shouldered tannins.

Boom! This is one of the best deals of the year. Sadly, Lavinea is closing its doors, but the silver lining is an incredible price on this majestic Pinot Noir from one of Oregon’s premier vineyards, Temperance Hill. Lavinea was founded in 2014 by Greg Ralston, formerly of Château Montelena, Wilson Daniels, and Evening Land, alongside Isabelle Meunier, the former Evening Land winemaker who also trained under Burgundian legend Dominique Lafon. Together, they quickly put Lavinea on the map with outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from some of Oregon’s finest vineyard sites. Despite major critical acclaim and a devoted following among Burgundy lovers and domestic wine fans alike, the winery recently announced it will close in 2026. Having carried these wines since their earliest vintages, I jumped at the chance to take every case I could of this remarkable deal: more than 50% off a double 96-point Pinot Noir. Temperance Hill is a benchmark site perched high in the Eola-Amity Hills. Nearby names include Bethel Heights, Zena Crown, Cristom, and Walter Scott. One of the highest and most wind-exposed vineyards in the region, it consistently produces wines of concentration, structure, and complexity. With total production of just 300 cases, this bottling stands shoulder to shoulder with the very best of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. The wine strikes a beautiful balance between fruit and savory nuance, with layers of wild red berry fruit, black raspberry, sage, baking spice, and hints of bramble and underbrush. Earthy spice, agarwood, and incense add further complexity. Elegant and refined yet quietly powerful, it has all the pedigree and structure to improve over the next 5 to 8 years, if not longer. An absolute steal for top-tier Pinot Noir at a fabulous price. When it’s gone, it’s gone for good.
