The 2024 bottling of Clos Vernay from the Lafarge family is another classic in the making. It is a touch more structured out of the blocks than the straight Fleurie bottling, but shares the same lovely sense of sappiness in its bouquet of red and black cherries, gamebird, a touch of mustard seed, distant bonfire, a superb base of soil tones and a topnote of rose petals. On the palate the wine is deep, focused, full-bodied and nascently complex, with excellent depth of fruit, fine soil transparency and grip, ripe, buried tannins and a long, impeccably balanced and very promising finish. Just give this lovely Fleurie a few years of bottle age before having at it. 2029-2050.

Clos Vernay sits on granite with quartz, surrounded by trees. The 2024 yield was just under 10 hl/ha. Medium crimson red, some blood orange. Expansive red fruit here with some white pepper behind. Some tension. Not quite sure of its place, perhaps it needs more sunshine and less humidity. Drink from 2027-2029. Tasted Oct 2025.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "1.3 ha, a granite and quartz base. Elevage in a foudre. A small, narrow beam of sizzling fruit energy, wrapped with an elegant floral accompaniment. Hmm, more direct and melting, slightly structural – chiselled – with exquisite flavours – that’s a great wine – bravo !!"(01/2026)
