The wine itself is stunning, classic Sandhi. La Rinconada Vineyard, now almost 30 years old, was planted by legendary vigneron Richard Sanford, right next door to his eponymous Sanford & Benedict Vineyard. This spot is ground zero for Sta Rita Hills Pinot Noir with its calcareous clay, Botella Loam soils and cooling breezes funneling down the valley. La Rinconada was also the first certified organic vineyard in Santa Barbara County setting a high bar for meticulous organic viticulture long before it was in vogue. The wine was fermented with native yeast, predominantly whole-cluster, then aged in neutral French oak for 10 months. The wine is both floral and savory at once. Wildflowers in a hedgerow with juicy berry fruits, amaro-like qualities of alpine herbs, spiced citrus peel, raspberry and subtle clove.
