What an incredible interplay of golden fruit aromas and fantastic spicy complexity this enormously concentrated and creamy Mosel riesling has. Not analytically dry, but with spot-on balance, and everything is perfectly integrated on the medium-bodied palate. An extremely long, caressing finish makes you forget all your troubles. Ur alt means very old in German, and this wine comes from this producer’s oldest vines, planted pre-1910. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese feinherb "Ur" Alte Reben comes from vines planted between 1908 and 1910, producing tiny, loose grapes. Subtle savor unites slate, herb and citrus in the gentlest fashion. The palate is juicy, fresh, lithe, smooth and aromatic with a lovely intensity of aroma, unobtrusive yet insistent, supported by a mouthfeel like a nano-particled phenolic veil. Its 12 g/L of sweetness comes across as dry due to proper acidity. Supremely elegant.(AK)

From vines planted more than 100 years ago and whose grapes are picked slightly overripe (pink-colored), the 2023 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese feinherb "Ur-alte Reben" is clear and concentrated on the pure, intense and flinty nose that reveals ripe yellow fruit aromas. Ripe, lush and elegant, this is a well-concentrated and crystalline Riesling that is round, intense and still a little sharp. Bottled with 12 grams per liter of residual sugar. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2026.(SR)

I've long appreciated well made German Rieslings as they offer lower alcohol levels along with delicious fruit, crisp acids and compatibility with a wide variety of foods. They're especially ideal for our Western US climate. This first-class white has distinct granite mineral aromas and rich orchard fruit flavors along great depth and complexity. Can be appreciated now yet will cellar nicely.

The Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Feinherb 2023 “Ur” alte Reben MCM, as it is referred to on the consumer label, is an off-dry wine made from clean fruit harvested in a parcel planted with century-old un-grafted vines situated in the prime Class I Lieu-Dit Kackert, and which formerly belonged the von Schorlemer Estate. It displays a beautifully aromatic and captivating nose of almond cream, candied pineapple, pink grapefruit, thyme, laurel, cinnamon, toast, and licorice. The wine proves super light and quite airy on the palate, and the delicate creamy elements are quickly wrapped in punchier, zest notes of spices and herbs. The finish is comparatively lean and focused, and nicely mouth-watering. This lighter version of off-dry Ur Alte Reben is superb."(01/2025)
