2023 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Review Date: 01/2025Singing with Bonnes-Mares typicity on the nose, this also has gracious waves of whole cluster aromatics. The combination soars with blackberry preserves, forest floor and spearmint. The freshness is impressive, giving this full-bodied wine ample vitality for the long haul, between the mouthwatering acidity and lightly crusty tannins. Coming exclusively from the red clay sector, there is no need to rush this. Give it at least seven to eight years.

Firm, dense, and tannic, the Bonnes-Mares from Drouhin-Laroze is typical of this majestic grand cru, but the position of the 1.5 hectare domaine parcel at the top of the slope ensures that the wine also has a lively freshness and an expressive blackberry fruit with hints of earth and spice. The grapes were fermented as 30% whole clusters in 2023. Give this wine five to seven years before opening and drink over the next 25.(CC)

The 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet that shades the Chapelle and Latricières-Chambertin: red cherry, raspberry and forest floor scents, with hints of iris flower in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy tannins, fine depth, gentle grip and a sensual, lightly spiced finish. This should age extremely well in bottle, as the second winter will fill it out.(NM)

Note: from a 1.5 ha parcel that is almost entirely in the terres rouges section. This is also interesting aromatically as there is a red cherry bonbon character to the aromas of kirsch, spice and pretty floral nuances. The succulent, caressing and admirably rich larger-bodied flavors display excellent power on the sappy, youthfully austere and equally compact finale that is also austere though not quite to the same degree. More depth will be needed to achieve the upper end of my projected range.
