The Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2022 Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso is drop-dead gorgeous, starting with its heady scents of wild rose, blue flower, camphor and dark, exotic spice. Made from extremely old vines in what are some of the rockiest soils in the denomination, it’s smooth, delicious and elegantly structured, delivering layers of ripe raspberry, creamed strawberry, bitter orange, star anise and crushed mint. A saline mineral tang signals the close while taut, ultra-refined tannins provide seamless support. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced and energized. (KO)

A tense, lively Etna that’s not without complexity, the low-key nose showing subtle strawberries, dried cherries, black pepper and redcurrants mixed with smoky tones. Medium- to full-bodied, it has an elegant palate, velvety tannins, crisp acidity and a good, long finish with restrained minerals. Drink or hold. (AF)

The wine reveals a dark ruby color with plenty of shine. Mineral nuances are laced throughout its elegantly lean-bodied finish. You also recognize wild cherry, redcurrant and a spicy hint of clove. On the palate, it is "vivid and intense," balancing a creamy basalt texture with zesty acidity and fine, silky tannins. While it possesses significant "oomph" and depth, it remains elegant and transparent, with a long, violet-laced finish.
