2021 Cristian Boffa "Capalot" Barolo

The 2021 Barolo Capalot is terrific. Ample and explosive, with tons of textural depth, the 2021 possesses notable persistence from start to finish. Heady dark red/plum fruit, leather, incense, tobacco and pomegranate infuse the 2021 with tremendous concentration. The Capalot can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, but it also has the sheer depth to drink well for a number of years. (AG)

This is the wine that made us pick up the phone. From a great, classically structured vintage, the 2021 Capalot has the depth and grip of serious La Morra Barolo, with layers of dark red fruit, leather, incense, and tobacco that unfold slowly in the glass. Galloni called it "ample and explosive," and he's right, but what stays with you is the length. It drinks well now with an hour in a decanter and will reward a decade in the cellar. At this price, single-vineyard Barolo from a named cru with a 94 from Vinous is close to unheard of.
