Review Date: 04/202590+ points. The Trans-Douro-Express range is meant to showcase the character of the three subzones and consists of three unoaked reds—one from each zone—with medium extraction and ripeness. The 2022 Trans-Douro-Express Douro Superior was produced with a field blend of grapes from older vineyards (40 to 80 years of age) on schist soils, fermented destemmed in concrete for four days and was kept in concrete for eight months. This is rounder and more generous, a more solar expression of a warmer and drier part of the valley, with more abundant tannins. (LG)

Notes
Mateus Nicolau de Almeida is the son of João Nicolau de Almeida, one of Portugal’s most renowned winemakers, best known for his long career with Ramos Pinto, one of the historic Port producers in the Douro Valley. Mateus’ wife, Teresa Ameztoy, also comes from winemaking family, however, hers is in Rioja. Together, they have taken their collective knowledge to the Douro Valley. They focus on vinifying according to soil types—sometimes using the same grape variety—to highlight the distinct terroirs of their vineyards. The “Trans-Douro-Express” is a series of three wines, from three distinct sub-regions in the Douro Valley, from east to west: Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. These wines reflect the changing terroir as well as climate as the valley narrows towards Spain.
