2021 Henschke "Keyneton Euphonium" Shiraz-Cabernet Barossa Valley South Australia
95
Decanter
Review Date: 03/2025Luscious dark cherry and plum fruit, along with complexing notes of baking spice, liquorice and woody herbs. Dense and chewy at first, then a burst of acidity and a note of blood orange lift the finish and help it endure for a surprisingly long time. Harvested 1 March-22 April and matured in 11% new and 89% seasoned hogsheads (82% French, 18% American) for 18 months. (NH)

Notes
Henschke Winery is one of Australia’s most historic and respected wine producers, with roots dating back to 1868 when it was founded by German immigrant Johann Christian Henschke in South Australia’s Eden Valley. Over six generations, the Henschke family has maintained a strong commitment to traditional winemaking while embracing modern and sustainable vineyard practices. The winery gained international fame largely through its flagship wine, Hill of Grace, a single-vineyard Shiraz made from ancient vines planted in the 1860s, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest Syrahs in the world. In addition to its prestige bottlings, however, Henschke also produces more accessible wines that reflect the same craftsmanship, including the Keyneton Euphonium. The 2021 is 63% Shiraz, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot, fermented in concrete tanks and aged for 18 months in a combination of French and American oak. It serves as an entry point into the Henschke style, showcasing both the house’s blending expertise and the regional character of the Barossa.
