The 2020 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti shows how magical Nebbiolo and Barolo can be. At times quite powerful and at other moments much more reserved, the 2020 is a striking, wonderfully dynamic wine. Crushed flowers, spice, herbs, coffee and pine are some of the many notes that continue to open as the 2020 blossoms in the glass. Potent tannins drive the finish, suggesting that at least a few years in bottle will be beneficial. (AG) 97+

Deep and sappy from the get-go, this red evokes saturated cherry, strawberry, eucalyptus, tar and mineral flavors. There’s a ripe, rich feel midpalate, and this builds to the long, persistent aftertaste, showing vibrant energy and presence. Offers excellent balance and expression. Best from 2029 through 2048. 316 cases made, 40 cases imported. (BS)

Showing more structure and depth of flavors than the estate’s already fantastic 2020 Barolo Pira, the Roagna 2020 Pira Vecchie Viti captivates with scents of fragrant blue flower, wild rose, dark spice and forest floor. Utterly delicious but also showing classy restraint, the palate delivers succulent Morello cherry, cake spice, licorice and orange zest accompanied by taut, fine-grained tannins. A hint of tobacco lingers on the close. (KO)

Notes

Roagna’s Pira Vecchie Viti Barolo is a profound and age-worthy expression of Nebbiolo, sourced from old vines in the historic Pira cru of Castiglione Falletto. The nose is intensely aromatic and complex, revealing layers of red cherry, wild strawberry, and dried rose, intertwined with notes of orange peel, licorice, and iron-rich earth. The palate is structured yet refined, offering vibrant red fruit, firm yet polished tannins, and a deep mineral core, all carried by racy acidity. A long, commanding finish lingers with nuances of balsamic, cedar, and savory spice.
