2025 Domaine du Vieil Orme Touraine Blanc Sauvignon Blanc
We often refer to Touraine Sauvignon Blancs as “baby Sancerres.” There’s real overlap in the terroir, with soils rich in clay and limestone, and the moderating influence of the Loire and its tributaries keeping the wines fresh, lifted, and vibrant. The key distinction—beyond the far more accessible price point—is the fruit profile, which tends to show a bit more flesh and ripeness. Vieil Orme has been a longtime staff and client favorite, and the new 2025 release is an absolute delight. There’s a subtle mineral backbone, but the wine leans into generous notes of candied lemon peel, pineapple, and a touch of passion fruit. Bright, expressive, and downright crushable, this easily qualifies as one of the best values for Sauvignon Blanc on the shelf—regardless of category. Another triumph from one of our favorite Direct Import producers.

This family-owned domaine, located in the tiny Loire village of St-Julien-de-Chédon, dates back to 1804. Since 2009, Laurent Benoist has been at the helm, focusing his efforts on sustainable farming and pure, terroir-driven wines. As a region, Touraine has the flexibility to plant a wide range of varieties, setting it apart from Vouvray, which only allows Chenin Blanc, or Sancerre, which only allows Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. In Touraine, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and a few other indigenous grapes are seen at much smaller production levels. This gives the region the freedom to be creative in their blends. In this expression of Domaine du Vieil Orme's 100% Sauvignon Blanc, snappy sweet pea and gooseberry aromas give way to a softer palate, while pear, white peach, and grapefruit zest all make an appearance. The acidity is vibrant and fresh, and there’s a pleasing tinge of lemongrass on the finish. Try it as an accompaniment to seafood; mussels make a particularly good match.
