Sihhenge (Mhoba) Natal Queen Pineapple Infused South African Rum (750ml)
Notes
Mhoba has quickly become one of the most exciting rum distilleries on earth, not because South Africa has some long-established rum tradition, but because founder Robert Greaves seems to have built one from scratch on his family’s estate in Malalane. Mhoba means sugarcane in the local siSwati dialect, and everything here begins with estate-grown cane, hand harvested and pressed fresh rather than reduced to molasses. The homemade, engineer-driven approach is part of the magic: Robert designed much of the equipment himself, including the cane processing system and custom stainless and copper high-reflux pot stills. Sihhenge, meaning pineapple in siSwati, takes Mhoba’s wildly aromatic cane juice rum and infuses it for two weeks with fresh Queen Natal pineapple, a fragrant, low-acid South African variety prized for vivid perfume and natural sweetness. Crucially, this is not fake pineapple candy rum. There is no added sugar, no artificial gloss, and no attempt to bury the base spirit. The blend combines Mhoba’s Select White and Select White Double Distillate marques, made from ambient yeast fermentations of six to seven days, giving the rum real agricole freshness, grassy cane snap, and enough savory depth to stand up to the fruit. The result is outrageous fun without being unserious: ripe pineapple, grilled tropical fruit, cane juice, vanilla, honey, nutmeg, brown sugar, brine, and a little funky fermented edge. This is pineapple rum for people who thought they didn't need it!
