Review Date: 01/2025A vivid purple with good depth. Like the Clos Vougeot, the Charmes is not immediately flamboyant on the nose. There is some intensity even so on the palate, maybe more complete, with a rounded, sensual, vivid, red berry fruit, fewer tannins and more of a velvety texture. Notably long.

The 2023 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru shows just a little reduction on the nose, but it gains intensity with aeration, developing violet and peony scents with time. The palate is medium-bodied and well balanced with fine tannins. There is a little more complexity and personality here than the preceding Clos Vougeot, with a sorbet-fresh finish. Give this four to five years in bottle. Good potential. (NM)

Note: from a .35 ha holding near the bottom of Mazoyères. Firm reduction blocks an evaluation of the nose though there is again good punch and precision to the lilting and refined medium-bodied flavors that also conclude in a moderately austere, balanced and persistent finale that is already displaying fine complexity.
