A super-smart buy, with kaleidoscopic spicy lift of black and white pepper, star anise and cinnamon to the bramble-fruited nose and palate. Saturating acidity and a raft of fine but textured, immersive tannins make for a dynamic, buoyant mouthfeel. Tapering and super-fluid, the elegant finish features spicy pimento, green peppercorn, with meaty and graphite/granite undertones. (SA)

It's spicy and well fruited but mostly it's an exercise in putting all the various components exactly where they should be. Everything here feels exact, and exacting. Red cherried fruit, black pepper notes, integrated cedar oak and drifts of assorted florals, all of which hone to a long, peppery finish. It's mid-weight at most and it's all it needs to be. This is the kind of wine that gives elegance its good name. (CM)

A heady nose opens with lucid layers of spices and herbs, olive brine, violets, fresh ground peppercorn, currants and blackberries. There's polished dark chocolate oak influence. The palate is chiseled, silky and slinky but with curves and shape, sculpted by fine, savory, pepper-flecked tannins. (CP)

This wine offers a rich and seductive nose of blackberries complemented by notes of cigar box, milk chocolate and subtle hints of pepper. Well defined with satiny tannins, it has a linear and precise structure that leads to a subtle, dark fruit-driven finish. Why wait? (JGA)

An absolute steal for the price, this Shiraz shows off the very best of cool-climate Australia. While warmer regions like McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley are rightly famous for turning out rich and plush styles of Shiraz, cooler locales like the Grampians in Victoria are producing equally stunning, spicier versions of the variety that bridge the gap between the Old and New World. The 2021 Cliff Edge Shiraz by famed Mount Langi Ghiran is a perfect example of this and drinking so well right now – balancing concentrated wild blackberry, plum and blueberry notes with super savory freshly ground peppercorn, olive tapenade and faint woodsmoke, all wrapped in clove, cardamom, and a touch of toasty oak. Despite having such high density on the nose, the palate is bright and fresh, almost lean on the finish. There’s a woodsy feel to the wine and a quiet intensity, bringing up memories of conversation by the campfire and hikes in the forest. Its cool-climate precision emphasizes finesse, aromatics, and spice over sheer weight, offering more elegance than many other Australian Shirazes. All this savoriness and restraint calls to mind the Northern Rhone, of course, but the brightness and freshness of the fruit is pure Australian. It would pair beautifully with spring lamb, roast beef, or even earthy vegetarian dishes like grilled eggplant or lentils. At this price, there’s no reason not to pick up a few bottles – it’s a weeknight wine that truly overdelivers.

Notes

Mount Langi Ghiran Winery is located in the Grampians region of Victoria, set dramatically against the slopes of the Great Dividing Range. The site is known for its isolation, granite cliffs, and unique terroir, which contribute to its distinctive cool-climate wine style. The location of the estate was first planted as early as 1870, making it one of the older vineyards in Australia, though it was significantly redeveloped in the 20th century. In the 1960s, the Fratin brothers replanted the vineyard, and later, winemaker Trevor Mast played a key role in shaping its modern reputation. Mast purchased the estate in 1987 and helped establish it as a benchmark producer of cool-climate Shiraz. Today, Mount Langi Ghiran is especially well-known for Shiraz. One of its most popular and accessible wines is the Cliff Edge Shiraz, often described as the “younger sibling” to the benchmark Mount Langi Shiraz. The Cliff Edge Shiraz is crafted from grapes grown on the estate’s historic vineyards and reflects the same cool-climate influences but is made in a more approachable, youthful style.
