Review Date: 07/2025

The 2023 Muscatedda offers an exotic floral bouquet that is impossible to ignore, blending candied lime, kiwi and chamomile. Incredibly fresh and zesty within, it cascades across the palate with mineral-inflected orchard fruit and green melon tones elevated by a core of cooling acidity. The 2023 leaves the senses completely refreshed, tapering off long yet spry with a minty resonance that carries on. (EG)

Let’s clear something up right now. When most people see the word "Moscato," they immediately brace for a sweet, fizzy, cloying mess that belongs at a thoughtless Sunday brunch. This bottle completely annihilates that stereotype. Down in the extreme southeastern corner of Sicily, in the blinding white limestone of the Val di Noto, Moscato Bianco transforms into a fiercely dry, deeply savory animal. If you are looking for a lazy sugar bomb, you are in the wrong place. The nose plays a brilliant trick on you. It explodes from the glass with that classic, intoxicating perfume—wild jasmine, orange blossom, and ripe apricot. But right beneath that high-toned floral wave is a profound, almost aggressive hit of sea salt, wild fennel, and sun-baked Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, this is where Marabino's rigorous biodynamic farming shows its teeth. The tension just slaps you. It is entirely bone-dry, completely bypassing any flabby, tropical weight to drive forward with a massive, nervous electric current. The acidity is razor-sharp, leaving a "crunchy," mouthwatering saline snap that lingers for minutes. This is a wine with serious attitude and uncompromising grip. It screams out for raw seafood, sea urchin, or heavily spiced dishes. A total mind-bender and exactly the kind of radical coastal white I am always hunting for.

Notes

The 2023 Marabino Muscatedda is a dry, aromatic white (sometimes categorized as an orange wine) made from 100% Moscato Bianco in Sicily’s Val di Noto. It features an explosive bouquet of orange blossom, apricot, and wild mint with savory undertones of ginger and Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and textured due to 15 days of skin contact, balancing its perfumed fruit with a "crunchy" acidity and a distinct saline finish from the white limestone soils. Biodynamically farmed and fermented with wild yeasts, it is a sophisticated, bone-dry expression of a grape usually reserved for sweet wines.
