2023 Pedro Parra "Vinista" Pais Itata
93
Tim Atkin
Review Date: 06/2025Despite the terrible forest fires in parts of the region, 2023 was a comparatively cool growing season in much of the Itata Valley. This cement and foudre-fermented and aged País avoids the variety's occasional rusticity, showing some subtle reduction, with rose petal and cinnamon aromas, plenty of zip and acidity and a core of redcurrant and wild strawberry.

Notes
Pedro Parra is one of the most influential voices of the “New Chile” wine movement. He started his career studying forestry, then went on to earn a Master’s and a PhD in Precision Agriculture and Terroir from the Institut National Agronomique Paris Grignon. He then spent over two decades working as a consultant for wineries across the world, including such famous names as Comando G, Jean-Marc Roulot, Liger Belair and Zuccardi. In 2013, Parra founded his own estate Pedro Parra y Familia in the remote Itata Valley of southern Chile, with the goal of producing wines that reflect their terroir, favoring old bush vines grown on granitic soils, dry-farmed and cared for organically. His winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention: native yeasts, gentle vinification, and aging in neutral or lightly used vessels to let soil, climate, and vineyard history speak through the wine.
