The Lafarge family has always made one of my absolute favorite examples of Bourgogne Rouge and their 2023 version is another stellar wine. It delivers a complex bouquet of plums, red and black cherries, gamebird, woodsmoke, a lovely base of dark soil tones, raw cocoa and a gently floral topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and shows a refined undercarriage of moderate tannin, with find focus, balance and precision on the long backend. Fine juice. (Drink between 2029-2050)

Medium red, glowing pinot fruit, a little more raspberry this time and some cherry. Just so attractive and easy to appreciate but serious too. A very long fine finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted Dec 2024.

Note: from 40+ year old vines in Petit Pré which was once classified as Volnay villages. This is also aromatically fresh and bright with its nose of red pinot fruit and soft newly turned earth wisps. There is a lovely sense of verve and very good delineation to the attractively textured flavors that conclude in an solidly persistent and balanced finish where a touch of youthful austerity eventually emerges.*Burghound Outstanding Top Value!*

The 2023 Bourgogne Pinot Noir is also charming and easygoing, offering up aromas of raspberries, plums and orange rind, followed by a medium-bodied, soft and succulent palate. Lafarge's wines generally show very well from barrel, but in the 2023 vintage, late malolactics rendered several of the wines inscrutable. The rest of the range also appeared to be a little inconsistent this year.(WK)

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "4 different parcels at the bottom of the Volnay hill. Very perfumed, but a more obvious perfume of pinot. Good scale here, framed with the velvet of a grainless tannin and beautifully delicious mouth-watering finish…"(01/2025)
