Classically pale in colour, this is a fragrant Passetoutgrains – the nose layered with pepper spice and delicate florals. The fruit is vibrant yet open, speaking of the ripeness of the year, with juicy and sweet strawberry and a creamy touch, with a pleasing earthiness and crushed-rock minerality to the finish. From a vineyard approaching 100 years in age, it spends 18 months in used barrels.(ST)

The gamay vines that go into the Lafarges’ Cuvée Exception are now fully ninety-five years of age. The wine has turned out beautifully in the 2023 vintage, displaying a deep and vibrant bouquet of cherries, sweet cranberries, gamebird, a touch of nutskin, lovely soil tones and topnote of bonfire. On the palate ht wine is deep, full-bodied and tangy, with a great core of red fruit, fine soil inflection, modest tannins and a long, tangy, complex and lifted finish. Fine juice that would make a great “ringer” in a flight of 2023 Cru Beaujolais at a tasting a decade down the road! (Drink between 2027-2040)

Note: from 95 year old vines. A wonderfully fresh nose combines notes of pepper and earth with ripe red berry scents. The racy and delicious flavors possess acceptable density while exhibiting good length on the ever-so-mildly rustic finale. This is already inviting and should be enjoyable young.

Medium red crimson. What a charming nose, much more pinot, with a softly generous ripe red fruit. A bit more acidity behind but this should be a charming gulper with a softer strawberry not. There is no Anthologie bottling this year. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted Dec 2024.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Over 80 years old, co-planted half pinot, half gamay grapes always maturing at the same time, in the commune of Volnay near Meursault. Grandfather first commercialised this.’That’s a very attractive – I’m just aching to put this to my lips. Mouth-filling – really great texture, a touch of cushion a suggestion of barrel – just an all-around dangerous wine – open it and it will be gone – bravo !!"(01/2025)
