The 1981 Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva is a stunningly beautiful example of this great Rioja vintage. The gorgeous aromatic constellation delivers scents of raspberries, cherries, very salty minerality, orange zest, cigar wrapper, a touch of celery seed and a pungent topnote of rose petals. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very refined in profile, with a lovely core of red fruit, superb soil signature, melted tannins and a very long, vibrant and complex finish. This is cut in the same style as the 1991 Viña Bosconia, but with even better depth in the mid-palate and a longer, more complete finish. A stunning wine with decades of life still ahead of it!

The 1981 Vina Tondonia Gran Reserva has a vibrant nose reminiscent of coeval Burgundy, with scents of citrus peel, orange rind, singed leather and a Tuscan delicatessen. The palate has a penetrating orange peel and tart cherry entry with potent earthy notes at its core. It is supremely well-balanced with an energetic finish underpinned by crisp dry tannins. This wonderful Rioja is drinking perfectly now and will age effortlessly. (NM)

Orange hued ruby. Some amber, too. This is holding on nicely with sour cherries and plums. Orange peel. Lot of flowers. It's medium-bodied with bright and tangy acidity. Hints of leather and nuts.

(aged in American oak barrels for nine years and then in bottle for a minimum of eight more years) Light red. Strawberry, dried cherry, vanilla, rose oil and cigar box on the highly perfumed nose. Silky red fruit, spicecake and floral pastille flavors are braced by juicy acidity, which adds lift and clarity. The vanilla and floral notes return on a very long, smooth, smoke-tinged finish that features just a hint of fine-grained tannins. This wine was previously reviewed in September 1998 and in November 1999. (JR)
