Review Date: 01/2025An even mid purple. Stricter on the nose, firmer tannins in the middle, but a wealth of dark red fruit as well, more on the austere side but with excellent persistence. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Dec 2024.

The terroir of the premier cru of les Mitans usually produces quite black fruity wines in their youth, but the 2023 version from the Lafarges shows a lovely mix of red fruit in its aromatics and flavors this year. The wine’s bouquet is a very pretty blend of red and black cherries, red plums, coffee bean, dark soil tones, pigeon, bonfire and just a touch of new oak. On the palate thew wine is pure, full-bodied and beautifully transparent in personality, with a sappy core of fruit, ripe, buried tannins seamless balance and a long, complex and beautifully energetic finish. This wine has great backend lift! (Drink between 2037-2085)

Pretty aromatics of bramble, boysenberry, cool forest breezes and crushed chalk lift from the glass. The spherical palate is seriously intense yet shows classic Volnay elegance. This is a combination of two parcels, each at opposite ends of the appellation vinified separately. One is 45 years old and the other is 73.

Note: from Mitans proper; destemmed manually. Perfumed aromas include those of red currant, dark pinot and a broader range of spice elements. There is again fine volume to the rich and relatively concentrated medium weight flavors that also flash evident minerality on the lightly austere, balanced and equally firm finale. Lovely.*Burghound Outstanding!*

Notes
Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Hmm – that’s a broad nose – and an inviting one too! There is a more mineral and profound depth to these flavours – the higher flavours are more airy and perfumed – it’s Volnay ! – What an excellent and delicious wine…"(01/2025)
