Fireplace smoke melds with baked blueberries and mulberries. Bracing acidity combines with broad velvety tannins to offer pinpoint balance. This is bottled exclusively in magnum since 2015. These 15 ares are the second-to-last vines in Volnay as one approaches Pommard.

Note: from a small .15 ha holding in Chanlins; destemmed manually; note that this will be bottled exclusively in magnum. This is the first wine to display any more than a trace of reduction and here it's enough to blur the nuances of the ripe fruit aromas. On the palate the sleek, intense and powerful flavors flash an almost pungent minerality that adds lift to the beautifully textured and impressively long finale. This youthfully austere effort is clearly constructed to age and in magnum format, which my suggested initial drinking window encompasses, only adds to the need for patience. This too is excellent.*Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!*

It is interesting, but les Pitures is another terroir which I think of as primarily black fruity in personality, just like les Mitans, and this year, the Pitures is all black fruit and the Mitans is red fruity! In any case, the 2023 les Pitures from the Lafarge family offers up a beautiful bouquet of cassis, dark berries, raw cocoa, gamebird, bonfire, just a touch of oak, bonfire and a lovely and exotic touch of lavender in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex and shows excellent depth of fruit at the core, with superb mineral drive on the backend, impeccable balance and grip and a long, poised and very precise finish. Fine juice. (Drink between 2037-2085)
