The Lafarge Caillerets is a standout, with intense aromas of black plum and nuances of earth and mineral on the attack. It has superb depth of flavour and a creamy edge on the palate. Some of the vines have been replanted in a biodynamic spiral pattern; these are now being reintroduced to the blend. Frédéric believes this is what gives the wine its incredible density. Whatever the reason, this wine is simply outstanding.(CC)

A full and quite deep crimson. The nose has restrained class, keeping itself to itself, while the palate is exceptional. With a mineral lift at the back after a superb velvet cloth which sweeps right across the palate. A touch of liquorice at the finish shows the late summer sunshine. Drink from 2033-2043. Tasted Dec 2024.

The Lafarge family replanted one-third of their parcel a bit more than a decade ago, with the production from those younger vines having gone into the Volnay villages bottling up until this vintage, where they have been included in the Caillerets for the first time. The results are stunning, as the beautiful fruit tones from the younger vines has given more vivacity to the personality of the older vines, who still hold sway in the depth and soil signature to be found in the wine. The beautiful bouquet hops from the glass in a blend of red and black cherries, Caillerets spice tones, gamebird, iron soil elements, vinesmoke, summer truffle and a gentle framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and vibrant, with a lovely core of sappy fruit, superb mineral drive, ripe, buried tannins and outstanding length and grip on the complex and soil-riven finish. A great bottle of Caillerets! (Drink between 2037-2085)

Purple fruits mix with dried cranberries and baking spices. An arc of acidity brightens the dense, creamy mid-palate offering shy notes of sweet oak. The nicely streamlined tannins stay on the sidelines. Half of this is planted in spiral and half is old vines, all worked by horse.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Two parcels – the old vines plus the first vintage with the spiral planted young vines. Hmm, now we are talking – fluid, more saline, but concentrated too. The minerality flooding the finishing flavours – so delicious and wide – yes !!"(01/2025)
