The estate’s Riserva is only produced in years of incomparable greatness, or when there is a particularly compelling story to tell. The previous vintage, 2017, fell into the latter category, while 2019, conversely, celebrates an unequivocally superlative year. It leads with a heady mixture of clove, vanillin and coriander before distinct mineral notes take hold. The palate is still somewhat muddled after long ageing in Slavonian oak casks, though properly youthful. Taut yet concentrated with thrilling tension, it vibrates with frisky acidity. Well extracted clayey tannins demand at least a couple of years in the cellar. (MM)

James Suckling

Review Date: 02/2025
A dark and restrained Brunello with aromas of savory blood oranges, meat, intense dried flowers, red cherries and red currants. Graceful at the attack, with a full body, firm chalky tannins and chewy, refreshing acidity. Youthful tension and a good licorice aftertaste.

Made with organically farmed grapes, the 2019 Riserva from San Polino has alluring aromas of dog rose, eucalyptus, juniper and pipe tobacco. Still youthfully austere, the vibrant palate delivers cranberry, pomegranate, orange zest, star anise and cinnamon. A tannic backbone gives the finish grip while bright acidity lends racy tension.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva combines a vivid blend of crushed strawberries, minty herbs, hints of rhubarb, cedar shavings and worn leather. It sweeps across the palate seamlessly and elegantly, with gorgeous, silky textures. Tart wild berry fruits are elevated by a core of tantalizing acidity, with tactile mineral notes that collect toward the close. Nuances of blood orange mix with a flinty resonance and fine-grained tannins as the 2019 tapers off classically dry and dramatically long. This is beautifully executed. (EG) 94+

Notes

The 2019 San Polino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a powerful, biodynamic wine produced only in exceptional years. It features a deep, complex profile of blackberry, dark plum, and forest floor accented by notes of blood orange, licorice, and balsamic herbs. On the palate, it is full-bodied and "corpulent" yet refined, balancing dense, savory fruit with thrilling acidity and chalky, fine-grained tannins. Spontaneously fermented and aged in Slavonian and French oak, it is a structured masterpiece with a long, mineral-driven finish and a lifespan of 20–30 years.
